Medicare Podiatry: How Are You Covered

As a senior who is covered by Medicare, you know that you will experience different kinds of problems in your body. Besides, you have to accept the fact that your body wasn’t what it was before when you were young. You will be more prone to different kinds of diseases especially disorders concerning the foot and the lower limb which can affect your mobility.

If you have problems related to the foot and lower limbs, then you might consider visiting a podiatrist. Basically, they will be able to help you with your problems regarding your foot and lower limbs and help you with your mobility again.

Medicare does cover podiatry but you need to remember that only for a limited number of patients. Due to rebates in the Medicare schedules in 2004, podiatry is now only available for a select few patients with foot and ankle problems. This coverage is for patients with long term chronic conditions, such as long term arthritis, vascular diseases, diabetes and other long term chronic conditions.

This means that foot care will be medically necessary if general foot care procedures, such as cutting of nails, removal of calluses and cons can be hazardous if done by a non professional to a patient with long term chronic diseases.

Treatment of foot conditions both surgically and medically is covered by Medicare if done in a hospital, in your home, or in skilled nursing facilities.

These are some of the things covered under Medicare concerning podiatry. So, if you have foot problems and you have a long term chronic illness, you will be qualified to be covered by Medicare for podiatry.
