The New York State Medicaid Program Overview

Medicaid is a federally established, state administered program which provides medical coverage to those who cannot afford it. New York state Medicaid helps New Yorkers who have medical expenses they cannot pay for and/or do not have any other type of insurance coverage. There are eligibility requirements that one must meet in order to qualify for Medicaid. These requirements differ from state to state. If you have questions about whether or not you qualify for New York state Medicaid, contact your local Department of Social Services. There, you can learn more about the program, ask any questions you may have and fill out an application.

When you go to the Department of Social Services to fill out an application, you will need to bring proof of your identity and income. This includes documents such as a birth certificate, proof of citizenship, your most recent paycheck stubs, documents which state any SSI or retirement benefits you are receiving, a statement from your landlord or a rent receipt, bank statements for checking and savings accounts, and documentation of any other health insurance if you have it. Your case worker can provide you with a handy checklist which details all the verifications you will need to provide.

There are special programs for families, pregnant women and children who may not meet the basic income requirements but who still require medical coverage. For example, pregnant women and infants up to one year of age get the expanded rate of 200% of the federal poverty level. Children between the ages of one and five years of age get the expanded rate of 133% of the federal poverty level. There are also programs such as the Family Health Plus and Family Planning Benefit Program you may want to ask about.

New York state Medicaid covers outpatient and inpatient medical care, laboratory services, prescription medication, nursing home care, preventative care and more. If you have questions about your eligibility or exactly what is covered under Medicaid, you will need to contact Social Services or the particular case worker at Social Services that was assigned to you if you have already applied for the Medicaid program.
