Pennsylvania Medicaid: How to Apply for PA Medicaid Programs

If you need assistance paying for your medical expenses, you may want to apply for Pennsylvania Medicaid. Although Medicaid is a federal program, it is administered by each state individually. Each state has its own programs and requirements. The first place to start if you want to apply is the Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare. Here, you can learn more about the Medicaid program and submit your application.

When you submit your Medicaid application, you will need to include verifications of your identity and income. Such verifications may include but not be limited to check stubs and tax records. When your income is determined, a variety of factors will be taken into consideration. They may include wages, tips, child support, spousal income, money in bank accounts, pensions, Veteran’s benefits and more. If you are receiving income from TANF or SSI, or if you receive other benefits like Food Stamps or heating assistance, it will not count towards your eligibility.

General eligibility requirements include income and age. For example, individuals who are age 65 or older, individuals who are blind or disabled, and individuals from low income families who are under the age of 21 may qualify. There are also special requirements for individuals with temporary disabilities and emergency medical needs.

Pregnant women may also qualify and can often get coverage for the duration of their pregnancy as well as an extended postpartum period. In addition, they can usually also obtain coverage for their children if they meet the income and eligibility requirements.

There are certain individuals who are automatically qualified for Medicaid coverage. They include anyone receiving TANF benefits, SSI benefits, General Assistance or GA, Refugee Cash Assistance, State Blind Pension, State Subsidized Adoption or State Foster Care. If you fit into any of these categories, ask your caseworker about Medicaid if you do not already receive it. If you do not fit into any of these categories but need assistance and feel you might qualify, contact the Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare. You will be assigned a case worker who can help you through the application process and explain the program in further detail.

I am currently on Pennsylvania medical assistance due to a debilitating disease that I would not be able to afford the medication and care for. I do not apply for SSI. How would child support affect my eligibility? Is it counted as part of my income? I need help understanding what would happen if I received child support which I do not.
