Do I have to wait a certain length of time after I buy my first Medigap policy before I can switch to a different Medigap policy?

The nature of insurance coverage makes it so that many small, seemingly unimportant rules cloud the understanding of the coverage.  The biggest instance of this with health insurance is the understanding of pre-existing conditions and why they are important for insurance companies.  This will be one of the biggest issues to consider before you switch your Medigap policy.

When wondering how long you should or have to wait before you switch your Medigap policy you must consider if you are being covered for any pre-existing conditions.  If so, you will want to check and make sure that the Medigap policy you are switching to also covers the condition.  If you don’t check this information out you could be left without coverage for your condition for up to 6 months.

If you have a pre-existing condition and you have had your policy for less than 6 months the Medigap insurer can make you wait for the beginning of your coverage.  If you have one Medigap coverage for 6 months or more and then switch the new Medigap coverage must cover you immediately.  Make sure you consider all of this information before you happen to switch your Medigap coverage to another company or policy.

Do all the Medigap companies really enforce the “pre-exisring condition” clause?

I have not seen this ( or maybve I have and forgot) in Medicare Advantage policies.

I don’t understand why some of the Med. Supplement plans have this clause because they can be much more expensive for low to middle income seniors besause their premiums are so high.

Can you tell me their philosophy on this matte?.
