New Medicare Special Enrollment Period

Starting December 8, 2011, you can switch to a 5-star Medicare Advantage Plan at any time during the year. You may be asking what a 5-star Medicare Advantage Plan is and it really is just as simple as the title of the process sounds. Medicare uses information from member satisfaction surveys, plans, and health care providers to give overall performance star ratings to plans.

The information should fit in with either a 5-star (excellent) or 1-star (poor) so that you know what type of service and treatment you are looking for. Finding a 5-star center may be a little bit difficult based on the information needed, but you should be able to get the information you need through the following.

• The overall plan star ratings are available at www.medicare.gov/find-a-plan.
• You can only join a 5-star Medicare Advantage Plan if one is available in your area.
• You can only use this special enrollment period to switch to a 5-star plan one time each year.
• You can’t use this period to join a Medicare Cost Plan.
