Eligibility for Medicaid: Who is Eligible for Medicaid Insurance Coverage?

For most people, having some sort of health security or at least financial security during medical emergencies are important. Besides, who wouldn’t want to have financial security? And, who wouldn’t want to have health insurance?

Nowadays, health insurance is everything. It provides cheap health care in today’s high health care cost and it also provides you with financial security by not draining your life savings to pay for expensive hospitalization bills, doctor’s fees and other medical related expenses.

However, you have to understand that not all people can afford the expensive premiums that private insurance companies offer. So, what if you are one of these people? The answer to this question lies in the state and federal government.

The state and federal government offers a great health insurance program for less fortunate people or for people who has low household income. If you are one of these people, you too can apply for this health insurance program called Medicaid.

First of all, Medicaid is a federal and state government funded medical assistance program. Unlike Medicare where it concentrates more on providing its benefits to the elderly and the disabled, Medicaid concentrates more in providing health care assistance to the needy or to people with low income levels.

Also, unlike Medicare where you will become automatically eligible by the time you reach the age of 65 or when you become physically disabled under the age of 65, Medicaid will require you to apply for the benefit. Medicare is also funded by the federal government and it applies to all the tax paying citizens of the United States. It is your right to have this benefit as you paid for it through your taxes when you were still working.

In Medicaid, it is funded by both the federal and state government. This means that the state government can set the rules and eligibility requirements in getting Medicaid for their residents. What this also means is that the rules and eligibility requirements are quite different from state to state. However, all states participating in the Medicaid program are required by the federal government to stick to the standards set on giving benefits.

What this means is that although the rules and eligibility requirements are not actually the same in every state, the standards are still there.

Mainly, the people who are eligible for getting Medicaid are people with low income levels or families with low household income as stated in the rules and eligibility requirements set by the state you are a resident in. You need to meet these requirements in order to qualify for the Medicaid insurance coverage.

There were also changes made in the Medicaid program where children, pregnant women, the disabled and the elderly may also qualify for Medicaid.

In the past, Medicaid was only being offered to poor people or people with relatively low income levels. However, today, Medicaid has become a lot broader when it comes to providing benefits to the people. In fact, some states even allow children and pregnant women to qualify for Medicaid even if they are living with families that are well above the maximum income level required.

In some states, expensive health care facilities, such as nursing homes are mental institutions are also covered in Medicaid.

So, before you apply for Medicaid, the best thing that you can do is check with your state laws regarding the rules and eligibility requirements on getting Medicaid.
