Ohio Medicaid: How The Ohio State Medicaid Program Works and Who Qualifies

Medicaid is a federal and state funded program that is the largest of its kind, as well as the longest running, in the state of Ohio.  The Medicaid program is administered by the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services.

Medicaid covers medical expenses for individuals who do not have health insurance and cannot afford to pay their expenses.  Low income families who meet specific criteria, pregnant women, children under the age of 19, disabled persons, elderly individuals who do not receive Medicare, families receiving emergency assistance from Social Services, and refugees with emergency medical needs.

The first step in determining your eligibility is to contact your local Department of Social Services.  You will be given literature that strictly outlines the criteria for Medicaid eligibility.  If you feel that you meet the criteria, you can request an application.  Once you turn in your application along with your income verifications, you will be given a case worker who will process your application and answer your questions.

The application process is quite involved, and is several pages long.  You will need to answer questions about yourself, your family, your income, your assets, and any emergency medical needs that you have.

It takes a bit of time for your application to be processed.  Once it is and you are approved, you will get an identification card that you will present when at the doctor, hospital or pharmacy.  Some individuals receive 100 percent coverage, while others are required to pay a small amount of money called a co-payment.  Examples of a co-payment would be something like $5 or $10.  This is a small price to pay in comparison with the actual cost of prescriptions and medical care.  Medicaid gives people a way to get the care they need but cannot afford.

If you have questions about the Ohio Medicaid program, the Department of Social Services can help you.  They can tell you more about how the program works and how to apply.  It’s certainly worth your time if you feel you are an eligible individual, because Medicaid is a wonderful program that provides those in need with the quality care they require.
